Warning signs a twister is approaching:

Sky often turns green,

Dark clouds appear, especially with funnel configuration

Atmospheric turbulence documented in recent weather forecasts

What to do:

Immediately seek shelter in a low lying structure, basement, storm shelter or safe room.  Try to put a mattress over you to protect from flying glass and debris.

Long term: If you can, BUILD A STORM SHELTER if you live in tornado alley otherwise always have a safe and nearby place to go for each location you visit!

A simple storm shelter can be made by digging a big hole, put a large old storage-shipping container, bus, or 6-7 foot cement pipe in it add wooden benches and large enough to hold a few (if you can), install a couple of vent pipes, mount a heavy door and facing, lay about 15 steps leading the opening, then cover everything, except the door and vents, with dirt.  Make that the first thing which is built and then build the house on top of it or around it.  If you have time before an approaching storm, put your valuables in there and surely anything worth over $500: car (if its big enough), computers, jewelry, art, kids and wife.  That may be all you have after the tornado!
